Udi is the holy ash that is collected from the Dhuni that is constantly burning ever since the time BABA had lit it.
Applying the Udi a little bit on your forehead before going for a good job, or before going for an examination is indeed effective. In fact, I apply it on my forehead before going to bed every night. As it is BABA is watching over us. With the UDI, I feel closer to BABA. Apply it on your forehead after taking bath or washing your face before praying to God.
Udi teaches us one thing- that ultimately we have nothing in this material world that is ours. Everything will be turned to ash. That is to say, UDI, teaches us dispassion and disinterest towards material life.
